In addition to the daily drop-in art activities and play areas offered at The Children's Playhouse, we also provide special playtimes for different ages, music and movement classes, and one time workshops. Read below for more details.

Special Programs for Kids
Tiny Gardeners: Storytime & Planting
10:30-11:00 Wednesday, June 2 and Thursday, June 3
We’ll read Eric Carle’s The Tiny Seed then plant our own seeds and create sunflowers to take home. Offered twice. This class is free to members or with paid admission to The Children’s Playhouse.
Wonderful Wednesdays: Baby Sign Language
10:30 am Wednesday, June 9th
Learn simple, effective signs to reduce frustration and increase your baby’s ability to communicate. Taught by sign language interpreter and mom Alicia Toomey. Offered the second Wednesday of every month, “Wonderful Wednesdays” offer developmentally appropriate activities for babies and toddlers in a fun informal atmosphere. This class is free to members or with paid admission to The Children’s Playhouse.
Additional Wonderful Wednesdays
10:00-11:00 July 14th, August 11 (2nd Wednesdays)
Offered the second Wednesday of every month, “Wonderful Wednesdays” offers developmentally appropriate activities for babies and toddlers in a fun informal atmosphere. Our activities will change from month to month but you’ll always come away with something fun you can try again and a nugget of insight how children’s play reflects their changing development. Facilitated by Playhouse board member Rebekah Cummings, who has a doctorate in child development.
Angel Bear Yoga
11:00-11:30 Saturdays, June 12th, July 10th, and August 14th
Angel Bear Yoga is a children’s yoga program created to nurture the spirit of a child while fostering a sense of wonder and deep appreciation for nature. Both parents and children (aged 2 and up) can enjoy this quality family activity together while learning poses representing positive character traits. This class is taught by trained Angel Bear Yoga instructor Lynette Walker. This class is free to members or with paid admission to The Children’s Playhouse.
Wave Your Flag
11:00-11:30 and 3:00-3:30 Tuesday, June 15th
Learn about flags around the world and create your own fabric flag to take home! This class for kids 4 and up will be offered twice on Tuesday June 15th; registration recommended as supplies are limited. Free to members or with paid admission to The Children’s Playhouse.
Third Thursday Musikgarten
10:30-11:00 am June 17 and August 19 (no class in July)
Spark the love of music in your child with this great monthly Musikgarten for all ages taught by Alison Moser taught every third Thursday. Your child will learn musical concepts through singing, dancing, instrument playing, listening games, and musical patterns. A sample class is free to members or with paid admission to The Children’s Playhouse. Starting in September, you can attend all nine 2010-2011 Musikgarten classes for free when you purchase the $30 MusikGarten home pack. Registration recommended; call 828-263-0011.
Backyard Bug Safari
11:00am - 11:45am Thursday, June 17, 2010
Come explore the creepy, crawly world of bugs! We’ll read a bug story, go on a bug hunt, and check out what we find under a microscope. We’ll also observe some praying mantis hatchlings eating fruit flies – take some home and watch them grow, or let them loose in your garden! Ages 5+. Younger children are welcome, but they may have trouble seeing through the microscope. Mary Beth Knight-Greene teaches science at Ashe County High School and has always enjoyed being outdoors hunting for bugs!
Bend Your Body From Head to Toe: Storytime plus Gymnastics!
11:00-11:30 Saturday, June 19th
Learn some basic gymnastics moves while enjoying a classic Eric Carle picture book, From Head to Toe. Taught by Playhouse intern, Amanda Martz, who has 13 years experience with gymnastics and cheerleading and is a six-time national cheerleading champion. This class is free to members or with paid admission to The Children’s Playhouse.
Tunes on Tuesdays
10:30am - 11:00am 4th Tuesday, June 22, July 27, and August 24
Come join Emma Yarborough for a rollicking music time featuring guitar music, fingerplays, movement and stories through song. A lifelong musician, Emma continues a family tradition of music and children’s entertainment with her own children Adam and Enoch. Meets the 4th Tuesday of May, June, July, and August. Free to members or with paid admission to The Children's Playhouse ($5/person).
Preschool Science
11-11:30 Wednesday June 23rd
Enjoy a hands-on science exploration with Molly Russell! For kids 3 and up with their parents. Free to members or with paid admission to The Children's Playhouse ($5/person).
Tie Dye Month
During normal Playhouse hours July 1-31 (The Playhouse will be closed July 3rd)
Make the ultimate summer souvenir at The Children’s Playhouse in the month of July. We make it easy by stocking everything you need. Take home your special t-shirt home and leave the mess here! We will have adult and children’s sizes on hand. Cost: $7 per shirt for members, $12 for nonmembers (includes admission to The Children’s Playhouse).

Make a Sea Turtle Nightlight
11-noon, Thursday, July 15th
Make your own sea turtle nightlight with collage artist Suzanne Davis in this fun workshop for ages 4 (with help) to adult. This gentle sea-goer will bring sweet dreams. Give as a gift to or keep for yourself! All materials included. $5 for Playhouse members, $10 for nonmembers (includes admission to The Children's Playhouse). Maximum 10 participants.
