• Volunteers Needed for Playhouse BuildFest 2024

Playhouse BuildFest is a FREE community event that will feature more than 70 STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activities for kids aged 2-12 including a giant Cardboard City, an Amazing Physics Show and more!  It will be held on Saturday April 13th 2024 at Watauga High School.

We need help to pull off this cool event! Watauga High School is not far from ASU and is accessible by bus, car, or on foot. We will provide food for volunteers, high quality masks, and documentation of service hours. Most importantly, you’ll have fun while sparking curiosity and joy in kids.

There are two ways to volunteer at BuildFest:

  • We need about 150 volunteers to run activities created by The Playhouse, sell food, and help with setup and cleanup. We need help with setup on the evening of Friday, April 12th and before, during, and after BuildFest on Saturday April 13th.

Shifts are three hours and there are many, many shifts to choose from. Click here to sign up!

  • Activity Partners

If you have a group of 4 to 8 people with a passion for STEAM, you can have your own booth at BuildFest! You must be able to staff your booth for the whole five hours of BuildFest (9am-2pm, April 1) and be responsible for setting up and cleaning up your booth. You can design your own activity or we have lots of suggestions!

The Playhouse can also help you with supplies for your booth. But we need to know you’re coming no later than March 20th. Click here to register as an Activity Partner.

  • Volunteering at Playhouse BuildFest is Convenient, Safe, and Fun!

    Convenient Location

Watauga High School is less than than two miles from Appalachian State University and is about a 20 minute walk. It is also accessible via the Green Route of the Appalcart which starts running at 9 am on Saturdays. There will also be ample volunteer parking at High School and we provide free food for volunteers.

    Covid-19 Mitigation Strategies

Our goal at all times will be to make BuildFest a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants. We will be using advance registration to spread out attendance. Hand-sanitizer will be widely available.  Masks will be optional but we will have masks available for all volunteers who want them.

    Training and Documentation Provided

When you sign up to volunteer at BuildFest, we will send you a short training video so you can feel confident that you know what to do at the event. When you arrive at the High School, please check in at the main volunteer desk for a safety check and to get your assignment. You will be given an apron, an optional KN95 mask, and free tickets for food. The volunteer coordinator will give you instructions about where to go and what to do. After your shift is over, please check back in with the volunteer desk to turn in your apron and sign out so you get full credit for your time.
