A Note from Kathy: Music at Home, Even if You’re Not Musical

When my son was born, he hated riding in his carseat and would cry during all trips, short or long. I found if I sang, though, he would quiet, comforted by the sound of my voice. Unfortunately, as a new mom, I didn’t know the words to hardly any songs except Jingle Bells. My days as props mistress for the high school musical had taught me a few verses of “Surry with the Fringe on Top” and “Oklahoma!” and I was pretty proud of my baby-calming strategy.

My husband burst my bubble one day when he grimaced,”All your songs are so rustic.”

“Which would you rather hear, me singing or him crying?”

“I’m not sure.”

Ouch! Luckily, Baby Nate was affectionately receptive to all our amateur music whether it was my “rustic” stylings or Craig’s rendition of Springsteen’s “Thunder Road.” And we all enjoyed dancing to Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook at bedtime.

Playhouse classes like Musical Adventures with Miss Laura and Silly Songs with Mr. Tommy are great for teaching both parents and kids songs that everyone will enjoy singing. I assure you, your child loves your voice. Below are links to some wonderful at-home music classes offered by Laura Donovan. Check the page frequently as Laura is sending us new ones every few days.

And why not have a dance party to Tommy Smith’s “Chicken on a Trampolene”? You can find Tommy’s full album of original kids songs, Everybody Let’s Go Outside, on YouTube here.
